It was the Portuguese that first arrived in
Brazil on April 22, 1500, they arrived on many ships commanded by
Pedro Alvares Cabral. The Portuguese embarked on the coast of Bahia
which is near the city of what is known today as Porto Seguro. The
first Portuguese trading post was originally established on the
coast of the Cabo Frio region, Bahia, and in Pernambuco in 1502.
During the 1530's the slaves began to arrive in Brazil from Africa
by the Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch. The slaves were brought to
initially work in the sugar mills and plantations. The two cities of
Salvador and Rio de Janeiro share the seat of the Government
General. It was in 1630 that the Dutch invaded the coast of
northeastern Brazil. They occupied what was one of the richest
cities at the time known as Olinda.
Brazil is the fifth largest country according
to the geographical area which takes up almost half of South
America. The name Brazil is not very well established but some think
it could have come from the Portuguese word "brasa". Brazil is
made up of hills, mountains, plains, highlands, and scrublands.
It was in 1822 when Brazil gained its independence peacefully. It
maintains a monarchical system of government up until the abolition
of slavery which happened in 1888. Between 1889 and 1964, Brazil
declared war with Germany during World War I and in World War II
they made Allies and welcomed Allied air bases which protected the
South Atlantic. By 1964 Brazil had many series of military
governments.
Brazil not only covers half of South America
but is known as the largest nation in the world. Brazil borders
every nation on the continent except for Chile and Ecuador. It could
also be split into the Brazilian Highlands in the south and the
Amazon River Basin in the north. Brazilian currency has been known
as Real since 1994, the symbol for the currency R$. Since the late
1980's early 1990's, Brazil had to change their currency many time
due to the very high inflation rates. Ever since 1994 the currency
has maintained a steady level and the Brazilians have been able to
get accustomed to a stable currency.
The Brazilian Anthem was written by Joaquim
Osorio Duque Estrada who was a very erudite man. He turned the
anthem into a lesson about erudite. The anthem is kind of hard to
understand due to the unnecessary rare words and many complex
sintatic constructions, it is even hard to understand by literate
Brazilians. The Brazilian flag was oficially adopted on November 19,
1889 which was just a short four days after the Republic was
proclaimed. The green in the flag stands for the Brazilian fields.
The yellow represents Brazilian gold which also represents the
wealthiness of the country. The blue stands for the sky of Rio de
Janeiro on the night of November 15, 1889 and each star on the flag
represents one of the Brazilian States.
